When they said that Legend of Korra was “Game of Thrones for kids”, they turned out to be more right than anyone thought.
I just realized that ATLA’s lionturtle (the one that saved Aang’s day) was the same one who gave Wan his firebending. Even if he’s not (since Aye Aye said there are ‘dozens’) he’s still one of the ‘fire lionturtles’.
See the sign/tattoo thingy above his eyebrows.
Bending: a gift of whom?
As far as I can remember our history lessons in ATLA were as follows:
Firebending: The ability to bend fire was given by the dragons to mankind. They were the original masters of fire. The first firebenders were the Sun warriors.
Waterbending: "The original waterbenders learned to bend by observing how the moon pushed and pulled the tides” - Yue
Earthbending: Humans learned earthbending by observing the badgermoles. According to legend Oma and Shu were the first earth benders.
Airbending: Airbenders first learned their bending from the skybisons.
But now comes LOK and we’re basically told that it was all a gift from the lionturtles…
What’s up with that?
Now, of course you could give several explanations. Like, for earth bending for example, that Oma & Shu lived long before Wan’s time. But that still wouldn’t explain how they were the first earthbenders (taught by badgermoles -who were the original earthbenders) if the lionturtle had the power to give this form of bending.
Also, from ATLA we know the first firebenders to have been the sun warriors (who got their bending from the original firebenders- the dragons) but in ‘Beginnings’ we saw them to be a bunch of materialistic simple people; quite the opposite from the spiritual orientated sun warriors. Remember the ‘eternal fire’ we saw in ‘Firebending masters’? The sunwarrior chief said it was ‘the very first one. Given to man by the dragons’. The dragons. Not the lionturtle.
As for the airbenders learning bending from the skybisons. I didn’t see one flying bison on that Air lionturtle city.
So again, what’s up with that? Should we just assume that everything we heard in ATLA were just a bunch of stories? Part of old legends and myths told by the sages and parents before putting their kids to sleep? I hope not…
Or maybe I am just over analyzing everything. Maybe the lionturtles were the first ones to only give the ability to bend fire, They didn’t teach them how to bend or how to pass it over to the next generation. Maybe the Dragons, moon, skybisons and the badgermoles were the ones who taught men how to bend, not the ones who granted them this power.
But even that explanation sounds more like an excuse. Leaving us with too many unanswered questions…
For all the Hebrew speaking LOK fans here you can watch LOK episodes in Hebrew (incl. Hebrew subs). I’m not saying I like the voiceovers though…
Apparently I always like the ‘bad guys’
In ATLA Sozin was my favorite character and I rooted for the Fire Nation. Even today I’m a total Fire Nation fan as I can relate a lot to its culture and values.
In ‘Book one’ of LOK I rooted for the Equalists, with Amon (before the finale) being my favorite, and Tarrlok on #2.
Now in Book 2 of LOK we’ve been introduced to Chief Unalaq and I’m already on his side. As I’ve said before he is a LOT like basically any of my own OCs and is both acting and thinking like most of them. Even if some of the more widespread theories are true (those of him controlling the spirits) he is still exactly like some of my previous OCs.
I suppose I like him for the same reason I liked the Fire Nation in ATLA. Putting lots of emphasis and importance on tradition and spirituality.
Meet Chief Unalaq
My new favorite character.
While most people seem to hate him I actually like him. Yes, he is cunning, most likely ‘evil’ [note the quotation marks] and is just using Korra for his own goals.. but… isn’t that all the more reason to like him?
For some reason Unalaq is very similar to many of my past OCs I’ve RPed with. He’s a very traditional and spiritual man, yet also a charismatic leader who isn’t afraid of using his own military in order to ‘restore things to the old ways’. To ‘fix’ the spiritual deterioration of their sister-tribe who strayed off the sacred path of their ancestors.
He basically thinks almost exactly like any of my characters with the only difference that most of my previous OCs were from the Fire Nation. Though interestingly enough my only WT OC -who also was a WT chief living in the North- did kind of the same thing as Unalaq is doing right now.
I suppose that because of my/my OCs similar way of thinking I immediately knew that Unalaq was my ‘new favorite character’ the moment he arrived in the SWT and started to complain about how ‘the Southerners had abandoned all their connections to the Spirits, even during their most hallowed times”. Also, exactly because of my OCs’ tendencies to ‘share’ their knowledge/personal agenda with others I knew right away Unalaq had plans to invade the SWT once he spoke of his ‘sadness’ and disappointment of what the ‘Glacial Spirit Festival’ had become.
In short… Chief Unalaq makes the perfect character for Conzu to like.
Q:What happened to you guys? You took down the site? I can't reach The Avatar Portal anymore.
Holiday Season coming up
With the holiday season coming up, and me being Jewish, I was wondering if there were any ATLA/LOK related Chanuka (Hannukah) pics out there. I’ve seen plenty of Christmass ones, but hardly any Chanuka ones.
So who knows of any? And perhaps if you’re an artist maybe you’d like to draw some to make your fellow ATLA/LOK fans happy during this years’ holiday season. :)
These are the ones I did find:
[Original post: here. I decided to make this blogable]
I KNOW RIGHT! He is the best! I really don’t get why literally no one ever drew any good hawt pics of him. It’s kind of frustrating.
To all artists: Here is my, and this anon’s, official request for hot pictures of Teenage Noatak. No, it’s not a request. It’s a desperate plea!
To fandom: ‘Like this’ if you agree with us!
If you agree: ‘like’ and reblog this! Let the world know! Don’t let us down. The fate of Noatak’s fandom is on your shoulders!
Nothing happened on this day (7/1)…
